After photographing and filming at the school, Fey and I strolled a bit and visited our friends' "casa under construction". When you walk around the barrio with Fey you feel like one of the "cool kids"...the closest I will get to the feeling of walking around with Barack Obama (intended as a compliment in case it doesn't read like one). He is cool, Mr. Conversation, personality, charisma, a snappy dresser--the whole works.
The barrio is, in a manner of speaking, Fey's life. He grew up in Maria Auxiliadora and has a heart for this community--a heart that is postured such that people would come come to know and grow in a hope that is found in Jesus. So, truthfully, more that simply feeling "cool" I actually feel hope-filled and encouraged when touring with my friend and pastor (doesn't he just look like a pastor!)
Now, back to "casa under construction". Construction barrio-style is always interesting to see. While most houses are made of similar materials (wood, cement, tin roof...lots of sweat and hard work!) each house has its own special character and customizations. While at times there seems to be a lack of legislation around these parts (where do I start...?) it is actually illegal to cut down trees. So, if you want to build a house as pictured, you need to go late at night or really early in the morning (or have someone else do it!) to "harvest" your building supplies. There are quite a few civic-wrongs you can get away with but keep your hands off the trees (thanks to one of the former Presidents who was fond of trees).
